May 25th, 2004back to the emergency room …
First, I have not been posting to this journal, but I’ve been far from slacking. All you have to do is look over at EverWiki to see what I mean. Further, I’ve been playing a “Lexicon game” which is a GREAT collaborative writing exercise.
Now, where was I? Oh, yeah … the emergency room. Sunday night I was scraping melted plastic off the bottom tray of my gf’s oven (don’t ask!) and the knife slipped. The incident was so fast, I didn’t even see it. I felt a “poke” and when I looked at my hand, there was blood oozing out of two wounds in the palm. The knife itself was totally spotless, which is a little weird. Apparently I had punctured my hand twice (actually three times, but the third wasn’t even noticeable until today). The blade entered the meaty part of my palm, below my thumb, exited about an inch further, and then the tip just nicked the palm about an inch further then that.
I’ve included an illustration for reference, (note: the hand is not mine).

Luckily, the blade was “in-and-out” so quick that I didn’t have time to panic or anything. Also, the wound is not deep at all, the blade just passed under the skin. Anyway, Lisa drove me back to the emergency room (where previously, I had a scratched cornea treated) and the Physicians assistant cleaned the wound and put in two little stitches. I also got a tetanus shot and a prescription of antibiotics for my trouble.
Lisa was very understanding, considering that neither one of use wanted to spend our Sunday evening waiting around a hospital emergency room. Personally, I just really felt dumb. As I was scraping I remember thinking to myself, “I better be careful or I might get hurt!” and then of course I forgot all about it.
Overall it was an interesting event. The wound is extremely minor, but how often do you get to watch someone stitch you up?
