Game of Life

March 30th, 2005

I ran across an interesting book in the book in Borders, yesterday. It’s called The game of Life and was written in 1925 by one Florence Scovel Shinn. The book is very thin and I’ll have finished it by today. What is so interesting to me, is that the concepts are so similar to what I’ve been reading recently, written by very contemporary authors.

The general theme is something like “the power of positive thinking” meets “divine faith makes all things possible”. The wording is dated, and she uses metaphors that include “a victrola” … an early phonograph player. Other then the old-tech and the turn-of-the-century phrasing, her message is nearly identical to Wayne Dryer and others.

On the one hand, this implies that really great ideas and universal truths are never too dated and always timely. On the other hand, these modern authors who have “discovered for themselves” something that has been around for 80+ years … is questionable.

Paul’s Last Day

Paul’s Last Day

A coworker and friend, is moving on to greener pastures and today is his last day at this job. He starts his new job on Monday. His name is Paul, and he was hired just two days after I was. A lot has changed for Paul recently, and on top of everything else he just got engaged to his girlfriend, and next week their moving into their new apartment, together. It’s refreshing to see someone who has his act together, and is so optimistic about his future. I’ve included a picture of Paul, taken today, below.

“Paul, I’ll miss your quiet company and wish you all the best in your days to come. Congrats on the engagement!”

Kitty Karma

There is an injured cat out there, and the owner is a fellow TotalFarker, and has asked for some financial assistance. Now, I know there are better causes out there, but everyone knows those issues that resonate with them … and for some of you it may well be this. I gave, and perhaps you’d like to as well. In any case, follow the link and see the story for your self.

Help Save Nikki

Important: we only have until March, 28th to raise the remaining funds … and there’s not that far left to go.

I arrived in Michigan Sunday, and the flight was uneventfull but tiring. It was packed with an all girls team of “Syncronized Skaters” … something I’ve never heard of. I was able to see everyone I came to see … that night! Talk about the efficient tourist.

Yesterday I ticked off a mouthy sales guy at “CompUSA” who wanted to sell Mom and I one of those extended warranties. I tried gently refusing, then when he went into his little pitch I tried some humor (“I’m allergic to extended warranties!”) and it was that point that he decided this was some macho pissing contest and became mean and upset. In the end, we got what we wanted, and he got the old heave-ho. So much for “mouthy & mean” as a sales tactic.

Today I tried Yoga for the very first time. Apart from being uncomfortably reminded of just how out-of-shape and inflexible I am … I was also surprised by the challenging level of effort that was called on. I was sweating and winded, like an hour of arobics, and this was just from slow movements held poses. I really, really liked it -though. I certainly want to come back and can totally see how Jim has worked this into his daily routine. It’s not exhausting, in fact it invigorates, and it’s healthy and refreshing. Plus, my back has felt better then any time in months!

That’s it for now … I’ll write again when next I have access to the net. “Stay Beautiful!”
